Parents want their kids involved in sports, whether that’s locally or in travel ball. In addition to physical activity, they see it as a way to improve mental and emotional health.

They’re asking, and trusting, coaches to do more in all those areas.

Those are just a few of the observations from the 2022 State of Play report by the Aspen Institute, which conducts an annual analysis among American children ages 6 to 18. Those results match the observations of Noonday Baptist Church’s men’s ministry 20 years ago. The church is in Marietta, Ga., just outside of Atlanta.

While the church certainly located in Braves country, the church has families in mind. Practices are limited to one hour a week, with devotionals just as much a part of the fabric of the game as balls and bats. All games are played on Saturdays. Coaches volunteer their time. Local high school and college players with whom Noonday has relationships conduct preseason pitching and catching clinics.

In the Baptist Press Toolbox, Sam Rainer offers three tips for young pastors.

Learn to love people much older than you. If you start pastoring in your 20s, you have a couple of decades in front of you in which many of the people you shepherd will be older than you.

Say “yes” to almost everything. If you’re in your early-20s to mid-20s and single, you have more free time now than ever. Fill much of it with edifying work, not leisure.

Lead evangelistically. Every pastor should lead in this way, but not every pastor does. So go ahead today and start creating a pattern in your own life where you constantly share the gospel. You should not only immerse yourself in the culture of your local church, but you should also be in the thick of the culture outside of the church.
