For Tommy Neiman, an award-winning firefighter and paramedic, the theme for his vocational calling has become about challenging first responders to be believers, and believers to be first responders.
Neiman described being fascinated with the lights and sirens of emergency vehicles as he was growing up. His curiosity would soon lead him to this spiritual calling.
He worked for 30 years with the St. Lucie Country Fire Department before retiring and still serves as their chaplain.
Neiman says he’s been able to see God’s hand in his work over the years.
He’s written two books, Sirens for the Cross and a children’s book called Rookie Rescuer.
The Spurgeon Library, located on the campus of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, celebrated the recent donation of a collection of unpublished Spurgeon writings at the second annual Spurgeon Library Conference April 19.
The donated collection contains 35 handwritten letters and notes from Charles Spurgeon.
Most of the donated letters are addressed to J.T. Dunn, who served on the elder board as secretary at London’s Metropolitan Tabernacle where Spurgeon pastored. As an active church member, Dunn led one of the Bible classes, chaired members’ meetings and supported the missions stations. Chang shared how Spurgeon’s letters to Dunn reveal new insights into the ministry of the church, Spurgeon’s relationship with his elders, the Almshouses, personal struggles and more.

A Lifeway Bible study says, “Famed evangelist D.L. Moody began his book “The Overcoming Life” addressing “the Christian’s warfare.” Moody identified two categories of foes that believers must conquer to experience an overcoming life. “If we are going to overcome, we must begin inside. God always begins there. For the enemy within is always more dangerous than the one without.”
Moody specified several internal foes. He cited appetite. The appetite takes several forms, but Moody highlighted the appetite for “strong drink” that can sabotage both the body and the soul. Moody cited temper; not temper in general, but temper that has mastered the individual rather than the other way around. Covetousness. So dangerous is this foe that it appears in the Ten Commandments. Jealousy and envy are taken together as a foe that puts its owner, not its object, at risk. Pride. All should be wary of pride, not just those whom society would deem worthy of it.
A part of the life of the overcoming life is to overcome these internal foes.
